Oophorectomy

Cyst Removal (Oophorectomy)

Oophorectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or both ovaries. Your ovaries are small, almond-shaped organs located on either side of the uterus. They contain eggs and produce hormones essential for your menstrual cycle and reproductive health.

When both ovaries are removed, the procedure is called a bilateral oophorectomy. If only one ovary is removed, it is known as a unilateral oophorectomy.

Why Oophorectomy is Performed:

An oophorectomy may be recommended for:

  • Ovarian cysts: Large or symptomatic cysts that do not resolve naturally
  • Ovarian tumors: Both benign and malignant growths
  • Endometriosis: When endometrial tissue affects the ovaries severely
  • Ovarian torsion: Twisting of the ovary causing pain and reduced blood flow
  • Risk reduction: Women with high risk of ovarian or breast cancer (BRCA mutation carriers)
  • Infections: Severe tubo-ovarian abscesses that cannot be treated with medication
Procedure Details:

Oophorectomy can be performed alone or in combination with other gynecological surgeries. Often, it is paired with a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or salpingectomy (removal of fallopian tubes), especially in patients at higher risk of cancer. When combined with both fallopian tube removal, the procedure is called a salpingo-oophorectomy.

Recovery and Considerations:
  • Recovery typically takes a few weeks; minimally invasive laparoscopic methods reduce healing time
  • Removal of both ovaries leads to surgical menopause, which may require hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Fertility is affected if both ovaries are removed; discussion with your doctor is essential before surgery
  • Postoperative care includes monitoring for infection, bleeding, and overall hormonal changes
